EN10225-3: EN 10225-3 - a typically European standard
Some standards are written for a limited application. An example of this is the EN10225 standard, a European standard for weldable (carbon) steel in fixed, offshore structures, intended for use in the North Sea area. Very limited, but still divided into four categories, with the third – EN 10225-3 – specifically intended for hot-formed pipes, both seamless and HF welded. This standard was developed in part by European steel producers, so the technical requirements were already proven to be achievable in advance. And the specialists at Bumaco even played a role in the introduction of the first edition of this standard!!
For your information ... the North Sea is not only between England and the Netherlands, but covers the entire area between the Netherlands, Denmark, the southern part of Norway, and Great Britain. And the surface area of about 575,000 km² accommodates hundreds of drilling and production platforms!
It would be too simple to compare this standard to a “normal” construction standard. An impact test at -40 ֯C or lower, ultrasonic testing and a transverse tensile test, a 3.2 certificate ... these are all requirements intended to withstand the influence on the strength of a structure from extreme weather, currents, and wave action. After all, you simply cannot compare a work or drilling platform at sea with a shopping center or barn in the countryside.
EN 10225-3 may be a “limited” standard, but for Bumaco it is just as important as any other standard.
