The American Petroleum Institute (API) has existed since 1919 and is the leading organization for the entire oil and gas industry. Known and praised worldwide for its expertise, reliability, and dedication.
What makes its standards – including the 5L – so unique is that they are always written from the perspective of use, not from the production process. A designation like “X65” simply means a yield strength of 65 ksi (kilopound per square inch), regardless of the wall thickness of the pipe. Simple and effective.
For your information … 65 ksi equals 448 N/mm2!
Although the API 5L was originally intended for pipelines, the material is also perfectly suited for construction and has been used for that purpose for over a century.
Moreover, the standard also offers choices. Not every environment or application places the same demands on the material. A pipeline under the ice in Alaska is something different from an offshore platform off the coast of Angola, and that affects the required impact test, just to name one example.
It may be unnecessary to mention that the tubes and pipes – do you know the difference? – from Bumaco covers virtually all options. Just take a look at the independently verified 3.2 material certificates that accompany every Bumaco pipe.
That’s what you call “a different standard”
API 5L pipes are used in systems for the transport of liquids and gases under pressure. They are specifically designed for, among others, the following applications:
For the installation of pipelines that transport oil or gas from drilling sites to refineries, storage facilities, or distribution points.
For the transport of chemical products and by-products within industrial installations or between production units.
For industrial or municipal applications, such as cooling water systems, long-distance drinking water pipelines, or irrigation projects.
For example, in power plants or hydrogen transport, where pipes operate under high pressure or temperature.
In urban environments for heat distribution (district heating) or gas pipelines within utility buildings and infrastructure.
For the transport of oil and gas from offshore platforms to processing locations on land or at sea.
